Cała historia naszpikowana jest różnego rodzaju i pochodzenia mitami. Wehrmacht Niemcy usilnie zwą "rycerskim", a to przecież formacja całkowicie lekceważąca cywilizowane zasady i prawa wojny dokonująca np. w Polsce we wrześniu 1939 r. ponad 700-set masakr ludności cywilnej bez żadnego związku z sytuacją na froncie po to aby zastraszyć Polaków itp. Austriakom zaś udało się wmówić znacznej części społeczności światowej mit o tym, że byli "pierwszą" ofiarą Hitlera. Podobnie jak prawdziwi Niemcy kochali swego wodza nieźle się przy tym bogacąc. Dziś już prawie nie ma w Austrii dowodów zbrodni czyli dziesiątków obozów koncentracyjnych i ich filii, w których działy się rzeczy straszne jak choćby w zamku Hartheim i innych.
