Podczas II Wojny Światowej Polska poniosła ogromne straty demograficzne. W 1938 r. RP miała 35,2 mln obywateli, a po wojnie już tylko 24 mln. w tym 2 mln jeszcze nie wysiedlonych Niemców. Dotkliwe straty poniosła nasza kultura, edukacja i nauka. Tylko podczas tzw. Intelligenzaktion w czasie kilku tygodni na początku wojny Niemcy zamordowali ponad 50 tys. lekarzy, nauczycieli, profesorów uczelni czy księży katolickich. Skutki tego ludobójstwa odczuwamy w Polsce do dziś. Ogółem nasze straty ludnościowe wyniosły ponad 30% obywateli, a w tej liczbie byli etniczni Polacy, Żydzi, Białorusini, Ukraińcy, Tatarzy i przedstawiciele innych mniejszości narodowych zamieszkujących II RP.
